Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The excursion leads to far West Germany, with a first longer stopover in Frankfurt am Main and a subsequent stay in Cologne - with day trips to nearby cities (Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach, Krefeld, possibly Duisburg, possibly Bonn). The focus will be on current exhibitions of contemporary art (such as Rosemarie Trockel at the MMK in Frankfurt, Elizabeth Price, Schirn, Frf, probably Julia Scher at the Museum Abteiberg Mönchengladbach (among others)) and permanent collections of modern and contemporary art (Beuys block at the Landesmuseum in Darmstadt; possibly Städel, Frf; collections Museum Ludwig and Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne; Kunstsammlung NRW, Düsseldorf (K20 and K21)). We will also look at important museum buildings (MMK Frankfurt, Hans Hollein; Museum am Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, Hans Hollein; Haus Lange and Haus Ester, Krefeld, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (et al.)) - and more generally at modern and contemporary architecture and urbanistic constellations in these cities, which were heavily destroyed in the Second World War, against which Vienna looks like an open-air museum.
