Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In terms of research-led teaching, this seminar is designed as an integral part of the ongoing research project "Shaping the Visual under National Socialism". The thematic focus is therefore on the pictorial press and press photography in Austria during the National Socialist era.The current research project is interdisciplinary in nature and uses methods from the digital humanities. Over the past few semesters, a pool of press photos from Austrian magazines has been collected and systematized in a database. Building on this, further surveys of the magazines will be carried out in the seminar in order to introduce the method of quantitative data collection. The focus of the course will then be on qualitative case studies based on the evaluations of the image pool. We will cover a wide range of topics, including biographical research on Austrian press photographers, topic-specific image analyses and questions of the propagandistic use of press photographs in Austrian magazines of the Nazi era.An important methodological goal of the course is to impart research skills and strategies in digitized photo and journal collections. Accordingly, we will practise using the ANNO (AustriaN Newspapers Online) database and carry out online research, for example in the Austrian National Library's Bildarchiv Austria, in the photo archive of Heinrich Hoffmann (Bavarian State Library) and with regard to the photographers of the propaganda companies in the German Federal Archives in Freiburg. The course offers interactive learning formats and is generally very practice-oriented. In addition to input from the lecturer and a joint discussion of the specialist literature, data is also collected from Austrian newspapers from the Nazi era and several research assignments are carried out. In addition, students write a seminar paper on a case study selected during the course. The students deepen the specialist knowledge they have gained in their previous studies.
