Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Paul Cézanne is considered one of the most important painters at the transition from the 19th to the 20th century or from 'figurative' to 'abstract' painting. The seminar introduces to Cézanne's extremely heterogeneous work - from the polemic-aggressive early paintings to the late works seemingly interested only in form and color. Participants will learn to analyze and describe paintings in their formal and structural aspects, also beyond a namable set of motifs. At the same time, the seminar is intended to convey basic principles of scientific work: Close observation, self-reflection on one's own approach, linguistic precision and coherence, and the measured reference to selected and carefully read literature.
Assessment and permitted materials
During the semester, students will each write a concise description of a work (8-10,000 characters). The written work will be a longer (up to 20,000 characters) description/analysis of another painting (by Cézanne) that will be at least tentatively placed in a painting-historical perspective. In other words:
- active participation in discussions
- presentation (description of a painting by Cézanne)
- an in-depth study in form of a written paper (c. 15.000 characters)
- By registering for this course, you agree that the automated plagiarism checking software Turnitin will check all written submissions you make in moodle.
