Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
The present condition of all objects from the history of art and architecture is decisively influenced by their temporal transmission and by the actions in the conservation movement. Knowledge of the patterns of action in monument conservation and restoration is thus an indispensable basis for art historical analysis. The systematics of monument values determines the respective restoration goals. The lecture provides insights into the time-bound discourses of monument conservation that determine the preservation of works and shape the current appearance after restorations of the objects.

Contents:
- Artwork and monument - distance and context.
- Positions on history - roots and beginnings of monument preservation.
- Orientations - substance justice and work justice. Conservation versus stylistic justice.
- Paradigm shift - modern monument preservation / modern monument values.
- The tendency towards the "Gesamtkunstwerk" - ensembles and monument landscapes.
- Monument discourses / restoration discourses / restoration goals - dealing with traces of time and layers of time / document versus monument .
- Old and new - continuing to build on the monument.
- Monument setting through inventory.
- Public interest and legal protection - in Austrian monument law and in international agreements.
