Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The objective of this course is - through continuous work in Dom Museum Wien, which was newly developed and reopened in 2017 and has since been awarded with the Austrian Museum Prize 2020 to get acquainted with the diverse roles of museums (Collection, Preservation, Education, Communication) and to learn about the thought processes behind the reinvention of such institutions and how they are executed.

Moreover, this course will allow students to study the broad collection of Dom Museum Wien, ranging from medieval to contemporary times, in front of the original and to analyze the artworks in short presentations and short essays. In doing so, the students will engage with major works from the permanent collection, like the portrait of Rudolf the Founder, the first western portrait of three-quarter view, or the tomb of emperor Friedrich III (1415-1493) in St. Stephen’s Cathedral; in addition students will encounter art positions of the Postwar-Avantgarde, amongst which are pieces by Maria Lassnig, Arnulf Rainer, Bruno Gironcoli and Kiki Kogelnik, from the collection of Otto Mauer, one of the most important sponsors of the Austrian art scene after 1945.

A significant part of the course is set in the current temporary exhibition "Mahlzeit", which deals with the art historical relevance of food in art and society. Students will explore works of different epochs: from the medieval supper and baroque still lives to eat-art-sculptures and contemporary objects made from food. Likewise, students will gain insight into the curatorial work that goes into creating such a theme exhibition.

A central focus of the curriculum is working in front of the original art works, practicing the verbal and written implementation of visual impressions, and acquiring techniques for presenting and speaking about art in museums and in front of audiences.
