Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture introduces topics and media of Persian painting from the Middle Ages to modern times. This means works from art centers situated in Persophone (Persian-language) culture, primarily in present-day Iran, but also in Iraq, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. One focus is on imagery in Persian manuscripts from the 14th to 19th centuries, another is on wall paintings or murals. The lecture discusses functions, formal developments and contexts of book illumination in Tabriz, Baghdad, Herat, Samarkand and Isfahan, and surveys other pictorial media such as wall painting.
