080050 VO Andy Warhol. Machinism and Subjectivity (2016S)

More systematically than all other Pop artists at the beginning of the 1960s Warhol introduced silk-screen-printing and the serial production in his artistic work. Thus, after the end of modern abstraction the figurative, now photographically generated image returns into painting like a shadow of the contemporary mass media-society. Warhol, in addition, chose to present himself and his work as mere "surfaces" or as "mirrors" of this society. In his "Philosophy" (1975) and in in his Interviews (s. "I'll be your mirror", ed. by K. Goldsmith 2004) he proposes numerous models for this disappearance of the old authorial artistic subject behind the flow of images it passively reflects. The lecture will investigate these models, which are often related to the support and surrogate of human subjectivity by technical storage and reproduction media, as well as the status of the image, which imposes itself onto the disappearing subject. Alongside Warhol's painting - focussing on 'classical' works of the 1960s as well as on later commercial, more 'painterly' portraits - the lecture will look at some excerpts of Warhol's films and at his early advertisement work.
