Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Among the visual expressions of the Islamic world, calligraphy occupies a prominent position. It is the first visual art that develops after the emergence and the expansion of Islam. It develops on every medium from architecture to manuscripts and coins. It often stands alone. Sometimes, it even strays from its primary function as a vehicle of meaning. The practice of calligraphy is morally and socially esteemed…. This FS II/III aims at introducing the students to Islamic civilization and art through calligraphy. It will introduce them to the history of the history of this art, initiate them to Arabic script and explain the origins and major developments of Arabic calligraphy. It will also be the opportunity to learn about other forms of arts that develop in relation to the Qur’an such as illumination and bookbinding.
