Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
There are several possible approaches to Islamic art : by periods (or dynasties), themes (e.g. religious art), media (architecture, painting
). In this case study, we will experiment with a rather unusual angle of view. We will focus on one artistic center and try to assess the validity of this perspective. The case study will be dedicated to Bagdad, one of the most brilliant cultural centers of medieval (and later) Islam. Bagdad was founded in the mid-8th C. as a new capital for a new dynasty, the Abbasids, who ruled for nearly five centuries. Besides the rulers who stimulated a rich cultural life, Bagdad stood out thanks to its vivid urban society that played a major role in the cultural and artistic production. However, the city was ravaged by many invasions and wars from the mid-13th C., so that very little of its splendour of the so called classical and medieval ages remains. The FS will deal with various aspects of the architecture and arts of Bagdad (especially architecture, calligraphy, manuscript painting) from its foundation to the Mongol period (8th-14th C.), trying to assess whether there really is a "school of Bagdad" and re-evaluate its contribution to Islamic art.
