Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the course of the lecture, major works of 15th century Florentine painting from Masaccio to Leonardo da Vinci will be presented. Both, individual works of panel painting as well as overall depicting of chapels will be analyzed in detail. After a description of the paintings or fresco cycles, the iconographic characteristics of the works will be shown. In order to give a most comprehensive interpretation of the paintings and fresco cycles, the intentions of the patrons will be explained and the locations where the paintings were placed will be presented. In some cases, connections between painting and sculpture will be pointed out. The aim of the lecture is to give the broadest possible impression of the variety of early Renaissance painting in Florence.
