Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Clarification of one's own concept of art and expectations towards (contemporary) art; clarification of expectations towards art criticism; clarification of key concepts of art criticism and art theory such as taste, subjectivity, truth claims, aesthetic autonomy.
Content: Exemplary texts; exhibitions in Vienna.
Method: Reading, joint consideration of works, writing exercises, peer feedback.

Assessment and permitted materials

Writing of 3 short critiques in the course of the semester and of 6 (structured) feedbacks concerning texts of other participants; active participation in the discussions; extensive readings; exhibition visits (also indendently). The willingness to purchase admission tickets (preferably annual passes) for relevant institutions (Mumok, etc.) is required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The above performances must be achieved; assessment criteria of the written texts are precision of observations, clarity and consistency of the argumentation of the texts, transparency of the reasoning of the judgment; the oral participation counts 30%. Willingness to do extensive reading is a prerequisite for participation.
