Beginning with an overview of technical aspects and the historical development of mosaic art, this course will discuss surviving Byzantine and Byzantine-influenced masterpieces from the 6th and 15th centuries in order to identify similarities and particularities over time. Particular consideration will be given to the role of the donors in the selection of the decoration, the message of the mosaics in connection with their location in a three-dimensional sacred space, and their significance in the historical and social context of the time in which they were made.
The course course will convey in-depth knowledge about and an understanding of Byzantine art, and discuss these monuments in the wider context of medieval Europe, highlighting in particular certain innovative aspects.
