Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will focus on an important though often neglected aspect for the interpretation of artworks - the processes of their production. We will not pay so much attention to the patrons and donors, as is usually the case, but rather to the artists or craftsmen themselves and the materials and techniques they used to create these works.
The course will begin with theoretical discussions on the understanding of the terms "artist" and "artwork" in the early Christian and Byzantine periods, as well as on the methods that art historians and archaeologists use today to interpret such objects. The second part will cover a detailed discussion of typical Byzantine materials and techniques, which will lay the basis for the third part - viewing and interpreting original artworks. This will take us out of the classroom and into various Viennese museums and churches that house early Christian and Byzantine artworks or have "neo-Byzantine" decoration.
The exact programme will be discussed with the students in the first session on 02.10. and set according to the group’s interests.
