Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this case study we engage with current topics, questions and problems of contemporary art and discuss them on the basis of specific examples that can be experienced in Vienna at the moment. In a joint study of the contemporary Viennese art scene, we will look at the activities of different actors such as artists, critics, curators and various institutions such as museums and exhibition spaces, art academies, galleries, studio communities and residencies as well as off-spaces that shape the art field in Vienna.
Furthermore, we will focus on basic skills such as viewing, describing and discussing contemporary art, as well as reading and discussing theoretical texts that address the role of contemporary art in society.

In dealing with a specific art historical topic and the relevant specialist literature, students have become familiar with the art historical research process. They actively apply the content-related, methodological and terminological expertise acquired in the StEOP and in self-study and have practiced analyzing and interpreting works of art as well as reading texts in a structured, critical manner. They have mastered basic research techniques, especially those of bibliography, literature acquisition and citation, and apply them when writing their own texts.
