Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Since the early 1990s there has been a digital turn in architecture that on the one hand manifests itself in architectural projects that use digital tools in the design process and/or in their fabrication (for example through CNC milling machines, 3D printers or robots). On the other hand, in the simultaneous development of theories of digital architecture, which conceptualize the new possibilities of digital design and production methods. Thereby the digitally designed and/or manufactured architectures as well as the emerging theories of digital architecture in different ways fundamentally question the hitherto common conceptions of authorship, design, form, notation, process, representation, seriality, structure, tolerance as well as the traditional role of architects and their field of activity.Circling around these central topics, this course will introduce students to digital architecture and enable them to analyze the built environment erected in the last two decades against this background. Thereby it will become apparent that not only buildings that could not have been designed or built without these new tools were fundamentally influenced by the projects and theories of digital architecture.
Assessment and permitted materials
Participation, oral presentation and written paper (5 pages).
