Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Figural images in an Islamic cultural context are not used in a cultic function, but do have a place in the secular arts of princes and townspeople. These arts are only fragmentarily known in their early stages. The earliest known examples of book painting are found in scientific texts of Late Antique knowledge which were translated into Arabic. New forms are introduced with book illustration of Arab belles lettres-texts in the 12th to 13th centuries. They developed a pictorial language different from Late Antique and Byzantine traditions of painting. Earlier and contemporaneous surviving examples in other media include mural painting in architecture and images on luxury objects of handicrafts. The seminar will discuss selected examples of 8th to 14th-centuries painting in the Arab regions of Western Asia from the early Islamic to the Late Medieval periods with a particular focus on 12-14th centuries book illustration.
