Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

When a new Austria emerged from the ruins of National Socialism, the desire for a new beginning was greater than ever before. After years of isolation, the arts proved to be a reflection of the desire to reacquire the vocabulary of the international avant-gardes. The Art Club became a symbol of this new beginning. The fact that there are also 12 female artists among the 64 members is remarkable in view of a thoroughly male art scene.

The reappraisal of the work of women artists immediately after 1945 is still in its beginnings. The international Art Club as a concentrate of the post-war avant-garde is a symbol of this, bringing together well-known female artists such as Maria Biljan-Bilger, Susanne Wenger, Greta Freist and Maria Lassnig, who shaped the art of the post-war period. The proportion of female artists was far greater and included outstanding - now largely forgotten - artists who accompanied the new beginning with a fresh look at themes, art genres and styles.

The exercise focuses on outstanding Art Club artists whose work became role models for the feminist avant-garde of the 1970s, but also on personalities whose work has been forgotten. The focus is on a holistic view of their work, networks and political backgrounds. Maria Biljan-Bilger, Greta Freist, Marcia Hopman, Maria Lassnig, Hilda C. Polsterer, Susanne Wenger, among others, are discussed in detail. In addition to lectures and discussions on special topics at the Institute of Art History, the course's holdings from museums and private foundations give students the opportunity to experience works by the artists as part of educational excursions and to enter into a dialog with experts.
