Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

With Christianisation in the sixth century, the insular book illumination evolved in Ireland as well North Umbria which was Christianised from Ireland. The insular book illumination combined Irish ornamentics with Anglo-Saxon elements and antique figural painting. In this case study the relationship between figure and ornament in insular book art will be examined and brought to light with selected examples.

After completion of the course students should be able to
- do scientific analyses of medieval works of the insular book illumination
- realize contents, name and describe them and understand the developments of forms in insular book illumination.
- present the outcomes of the research in a presentation
- make a scientifically founded seminar paper about the topic
