Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The so-called "Character Heads" of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783) are certainly the most famous works of this important sculptor. This group of busts, which until today irritates and fascinates, provoked different readings and interpretations. The "Gedankenexperiment" by Ernst Kris (1932/3) e.g. had serious consequences. Kris exemplified his psychoanalytic approach by the "case of Messerschmidt": the unusual "Character Heads" became a symptom of the (presumed) mental illness of the artist.
Within the Fallstudie II/III this series of works will not be considered as an isolated phenomenon, but recontextualized as part of the complete oeuvre of Messerschmidt and of the theoretical discourse in the Age of Enlightenment. Sculptures - in the Belvedere, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Liechtenstein Collection - will be observed from a formal and technical point of view and artistic models and Messerschmidt's work processes will be analyzed.
In addition to the artist's work, the Fallstudie is also devoted to its impact: For a better understanding of the history of science, different methods and interpretations should be critically questioned and evaluated. Apart from his controversial reception, the Fallstudie addresses Messerschmidt’s influence on modern and contemporary art.
