National and international aspects in Japanese comics (manga)With the emergence of new media - photography and film - and the acceleration of international contacts, the classic division of the arts in the first half of the 20th century is becoming blurred. The artist's image and function change, as do the addressee and consumer.
The post-war manga, the first leading figure of which was TEZUKA Osamu (1928 - 1989), is a reflection of a cultural globalization, but at the same time it was stylized as a national art movement that was effective in advertising.
Using five works by TEZUKA Osamu, we want to trace the sources of the manga. In addition to east-western content and image traditions, we also deal with topics such as speed, technology, utopias, emotions, etc.
The problem of “national art history” must also be discussed in relation to manga. The big topics:Manga and the Traditional Arts in Japan: Content, Composition, and Visual EffectsInternationalization of national art movements after 1900Comic in East and West: composition and visual effects
(US and European comics, early films, and cartoons / anime)Manga and the connections to contemporary art in East and West
(Surrealism, Bauhaus, Yo-ga etc.)Representation of the invisible in East and West
(Motives of speed, science fiction, technology etc.)Change of subject between East and West
(graphic implementation of literary templates)These five works will be the focus of our cours:New Treasure Island (新 宝島, Shin Takarajima, 1947, 1 volume)
Metropolis (メ ト ロ ポ リ ス, metoroporisu, 1949, 1 volume)
Astro Boy (鉄 腕 ア ト ム, Tetsuwan Atomu, 1952–1968, 21 volumes)
Buddha (ブ ッ ダ, 1972–1983, 14 volumes)
Black Jack (ブ ラ ッ ク ・ ジ ャ ッ ク, Burakku Jakku, 1973-1983, 17 volumes)Only the Japanese editions are used (importance of reading direction and sequence of images), translations are used for understanding. The Japanese editions are in place and will circulate among the participants.
This is one of the reasons why I ask: HAVE BEEN VACCINATED AGAINST CORONA!!, so that we do not have to interrupt the ongoing contacts and collaborations.Information will be exchanged via moodle / e-mail, I will also set up a website
www.wieninger.com/mangaThe MAK's Asian collection contains original designs for a manga, and we can study the working methods of a manga-ka on excursions to the MAK.
