Aims, contents and method of the course

Exploring the multifaceted art patronage of Charles IV (1347 King of Bohemia, 1355 Holy Roman Emperor), this course examines key works of gothic art and architecture in Bohemia and in imperial free cities (i.a. Nuremberg) and situates them in a European context. In particular, we will study his building projects in Prague, which was enlarged and rebuilt as imperial capital, and analyse architecture, city planning and the ceremonial use of urban spaces with regard to contemporaneous ideas of rulership.

Assessment and permitted materials

regular attendance and active participation in class, oral presentation, seminar paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course wants to practice the analysis of works of art in their original context, help to develop an understanding of recent directions in scholarship on medieval patronage and encourage the study of gothic art in general.

Examination topics

Iconography, analysis of works of art in their historical context (original function, location, audience), patronage studies, medieval urban studies.
