Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

World Expositions originated in Europe in the mid-19th century. Until the mid-20th century, they played an important role in shaping national identities and competition. Although this function seems outdated for decades, these grand events continue to take place regularly. In 2025, Osaka, Japan, will host a World Expo under the theme "Composing the Future." Why is this elaborate, long-questioned dispositif still alive?

In this seminar, we will explore the idea, different orientations, and societal transformation promises of World Expositions, both in the past and present. The foundation will be scientific articles as well as materials from World Expos, such as catalogs, spatial legacies, and websites.
