Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The medial preconditions of art history are to be analysed. The course focusses on the challenge by which art history is faced through the appaerance of the option to represent works of art and architecture through new technical mass media like photography, motion picture and television. Moreover we will explore the "old media" of art history, primarily Drawing and Graphic Arts, as well as the latest digital media. An archaeology of the media of history of art makes clear that history of art history has to include the question of the used visual media by the discipline. This question makes clear the transition of questions, the methodical instruments and the realtion between academic research and teaching as well as popular art education are linked with the general development of media and the specific use of media in the discipline.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presentation of a paper during the course and in written form, active cooperation during the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A look at the technical visual media - photography, motion picture and television - should raise our awareness of the fact, that art history is a discipline highly supported by images. Therefore the medial placement of art in academic practice as well as in popular art education has shaped the perception of art and its history.

Examination topics

Working with textual and visual material (non-motioned as well as motioned) . Input by instructor, groupwork, group discussions, smaller homeworks and (short) presentations by the students.
