Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course we explore cycling as cultural technique. Calling cycling a cultural technique relates it to other much older techniques such as writing or agriculture. By tracing the bicycle's mere 200 hundred year history from the Draisine to contemporary e-bikes we explore the social, cultural, and political dimensions of this technological artefact and its enculturation as technique. We will investigate the changing designs, uses, and meanings of bicycles and the experience of cycling in order to understand the complex relationship between a technology and its perceived affordances across the domains of work, mobility, sport, engineering, and activism. We will also aim to interrogate the political potentialities of cycling at a moment when the bicycle has become nearly imperative for climate-friendly transportation and urban planning.

Important: this course will involve numerous excursions to locations around Vienna (and possibly around beyond). These excursions will preferably be bicycle-powered. It is thus *highly recommended* that you have access to a bicycle that meets traffic regulations and that you can ride safely. If you do not, please contact the instructor for further information.
