Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course consists of two thematic blocks.
In the first/theoretic block the central concepts around Art Brut from the 1920s (Hans Prinzhorn: "Artistry of the Mentally Ill", 1922) until today as well as the main theorists are to be identified (Prinzhorn, Wölfli, Dubuffet, etc.).
After this historic definition the second block aims at finding out the main artistic positions of Art Brut within the contemporary art market and discussing them against the background of the theoretic discourse. This seems especially relevant as well-known scientists such as the art theorist and cultural sociologist Peter Gorsen have already written about the absorption of Art Brut through Art Culturel. Thus the question arises: are there any more so called "outsiders" at all, who create their artworks "following nothing but their very personal urges" (Johann Feilacher)?
It is the students' task to discuss the issues arising amongst themselves as well as in talks with experts and actors from the field. For this reason three excursions into the surroundings of Vienna are part of the course (Caritas Atelier 10, pro mente Kunstraum Sonnensegel und Art Brut Center Gugging). On these occasions talks with the workshop leaders as well as the artists themselves on site are scheduled.

Assessment and permitted materials

Course assessment is based on active participation, short talks and essays handed in at the end of term.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course wants to enable students to self-sufficiently approach the theme suggested. Thus one of the main aims is to increase the ability to carry out scientific research. All information gathered by the students is discussed within the group and examined according to its relevance. By the end of term the students are able to tackle scientific questions with greater research skills.
