Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will explore the production of metalworks from Islamic lands. An introduction to the materials, techniques, main decorative themes and iconic objects related to the production of metalworks in Islamic art will be offered. Further on, the focus of the course will be on the production of metalworks in the northern Mesopotamian region during the Middle Ages. Patrons, artists and interactions between Muslims and Christians operating around the city of Mosul will be explored through a close reading of selected objects. Students will be asked to engage with the themes of the seminar and guided in order to offer a proper and exhaustive analysis of single case-studies.
