Labour is a historically evolved category of empirical research into everyday culture. Accordingly, the focus of empirical cultural studies relating to work (and, for example, in contrast, to "non-work") has shifted time and again. These paradigm shifts from worker's culture research to work culture research - and back? - are traced in the seminar by reading debates in European Ethnology. How was work - and thus also non-work or grey areas - thematised in early 20th century ethnology, such as during National Socialism? And what role did work-oriented cultural theories play in European Ethnology in the 1970s and what characterises work culture research today?
On the one hand, the aim is to familiarise students with different academic concepts for researching work in empirical cultural studies on the basis of readings. On the other hand, a knowledge anthropological understanding of scientific theoretical work as socially grounded is conveyed. Finally, the interest in getting to know and discovering research fields related to labour is to be awakened.
