Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

A building from the beginning of the 20th Century serves as an exemplar to explore its changing functions and architectonical alterations which took place in its special historical and sociological context (Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, NS-time, 2nd Republic).
As up to now there was nearly no research work done about the very building the students have to use the methods of architectonical analyses, but also to study sources in the State office for protection of historical monuments, the State Archive of Austria etc., and to interview contemporary witnesses. Traditional methods of Art history will therefore be joined with methods which are used primarily in the fields of History and especially Contemporary history.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The target of the seminar is to enhance our knowledge about the very building, but moreover to challenge the students to intensify their methodological skills. An exhibition about the building embedded in its changing historical context is planned.

Examination topics

Performance appraisal
Verbal contributions and the report (including PPT etc.) will be taken into consideration. The collaboration of the students in groups is encouraged.
