Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Already in the 16th century, Naples was considered one of Europe's leading cultural metropolises. For three decades, the city was governed by French, Aragonese, and Spanish viceroys. After the War of the Spanish Succession, the Habsburgs of Austria replaced the Spanish regency in 1707. Although the administration of the Austrian viceroys lasted less than thirty years (1707-1734), it led to an extraordinary intensification of economic and cultural relations between Naples and Vienna. Consequently, cultural and artistic exchange processes developed between the two artistic centres, traces of which can still be observed today. The course invites students to explore the most important Neapolitan Baroque paintings that can be admired in Vienna today. In addition to analysing the stylistic and iconographic aspects of these masterpieces on-site, we will examine their creation processes and the conditions under which they were commissioned. Particular attention will be given to the artistic taste and representational strategies of the Viennese aristocracy, focusing on the collecting activities of important patrons and the decoration of city and garden palaces during this period.
