Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

One of the first photographs depicting a human being is dedicated to an urban scene: taken from the window of a multi-story house, the reproduction preserved today shows a street situation with two shilouettes. Not a pose, but a fleeting scene? The tension that arises from pose and chance, observation and inattention, is crucial for the characterization of modern urbanity in the making, and it is no coincidence that it is also inscribed in the Daguerrotypie of 1838. What is the connection between the city and its manifold developments and the medium of photography, its applications and themes?
The lecture traces historical and contemporary situations in which photography as a practice and medium of representation of urban societies sheds light on the relationship between subject, society, and the materialities of the city.
The lecture conveys the themes and approaches of empirical cultural studies' analyses of these diverse historical and contemporary relationships between the city and photography. It illustrates this with a variety of studies on individual cities as well as current exhibitions on the topic. Questions of media change and urban transformation will be discussed in exchange with students. If the pandemic situation allows, 1-2 current exhibitions will be visited.
