Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this lecture, we look at society as an assemblage that emerges from more or less reliable social relationships. Community, class, milieu, scene, or family, clique, neighborhood are just some of the concepts in cultural studies that describe social relationships based on different commitments. Without claiming to be exhaustive, the lecture explores some of the cultural forms that make these social relationships reliable or binding: In addition to legal dimensions, these include ritualized and discursive practices, such as gifts, promises, or shared symbols. The lecture also examines how commitment can be investigated and depicted through cultural analysis.
Students gain an insight into studies on social reliability. They learn how to problematize the stability and instability of social contexts through cultural analysis.
The lecture consists of classical lectures by the lecturer as well as interactive elements to deepen the content presented.
