Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The subject of photography under National Socialism and the corresponding literature is endless. Recently, photo-historical research on the Nazi dictatorship has established itself as an interdisciplinary image science. It is therefore necessary to gain an overview of the dominant lines of research and current research questions in this field. The course aims to introduce the topic by means of important milestones in National Socialist image research, such as the controversially discussed Wehrmacht exhibition (shown from 1995 to 1999 and from 2001 to 2004). In addition, the students will prepare presentations on the following topics: “Gleichschaltung” (“coordination” – the political and ideological alignment with National Socialist policy) of the illustrated press, icons of National Socialist photography, political propaganda and the Holocaust from the perspective of perpetrators and victims. The question of how the Holocaust can be conveyed in memorials and the presentation of the National Socialist era in the Haus der Geschichte Österreichs will also be discussed.

A further focus of the course is on digitized photo collections of the National Socialist era, which are continuously being made accessible and enable new research questions and approaches. Accordingly, students will learn how to use the ANNO (AustriaN Newspapers Online) database and conduct online research, for example in the Ullstein Archive in Berlin and with regard to the photographers of the propaganda companies in the German Federal Archive in Freiburg.

Assessment and permitted materials

The students prepare presentations (max. length 15 minutes) or alternatively write seminar papers of about 10,000 to 15,000 characters. In addition, reading and research assignments are given regularly. The latter are to be completed by the students in a short and concise form within one week and submitted in writing.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The grade is made up of three parts: presentation or written seminar paper (50%), research assignment (30%) and collaboration (20%).

Examination topics

There is no written or oral examination at the end of the semester.
