Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

For us, how we dress is often a matter of personal choice. This was not necessarily the case in the Byzantine empire where a courtier might have changed his silk garments five times a day during according to strictly prescribed ceremony or a foundation document could limit a monk or nun to owning a single woolen coat. Costume not only served a social function - to convey information about the rank, wealth, profession, cultural origin and gender of the wearer -, but the cloth itself was also a commodity with material and symbolic value. By examining extant fragments of woven cloth and embroidery from different contexts and comparing images of emperors, aristocrats, ecclesiastics and commoners, this course aims to introduce students to Byzantine art and culture through its textiles and dress.
Students will be asked to analyze firsthand objects in the collections of the MAK and the Kunsthistorisches Museum and others based on secondary literature. Methods to be practiced include formal analysis, technical analysis, and iconographic analysis. Students with more experience may wish to pursue stylistic comparison and/or aspects related to economic, social and cultural history, theology and gender studies. All will be expected to read published literature closely and critically, prepare an original presentation and submit an original research paper.
As a Fallstudie I the main goal is to teach students the foundations of academic investigation in the field of art history and how to present the results of their research coherently in both verbal and written form. Students will gain practice viewing an object closely and critically weighing their observations against published scholarly literature.
