This Fallstudie will undertake a broad examination of the topic of "icons" - from the Greek term eikon and early Christian encaustic icons, through the Byzantine period, to the application of the term in modern artistic contexts such as to (the commodification of) the Mona Lisa or Warhol's portraits of Marilyn Monroe. Since the main focus is on the medieval and early modern periods, it will focus primarily on iconography and will also look at the theological underpinnings of icon production and devotion in a post-Iconoclastic, Byzantine/Orthodox context. Methods:
Students will be asked to analyze objects firsthand and others based on secondary literature. Methods to be practiced include formal analysis, technical analysis, and iconographic analysis. Students may also wish to pursue stylistic comparison and/or aspects related to social history and cultural history, gender and theology. All will be expected to read published literature closely and critically. The last three meetings of this Fallstudie will be devoted to techniques of academic writing (in addition to the mandatory tutoring session).
Goals:
As a Fallstudie I the main goal is to convey the foundations of academic investigation in the field of art history and to provide students with practice in presenting the results of their research coherently in both verbal and written form. Students should learn to view an object closely and critically weigh their observations against published scholarly literature.
