Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Viennese collections, such as the Museum of Ethnology or the Museum of Applied Arts, also house Asiatic objects of art from various epochs and with different religious, geographical and historical contexts.
In the case study, we will study a selection of objects, largely from the Museum of Ethnology, and analyze their iconographies and styles.

Assessment and permitted materials

Mandatory attendance and active participation, text analysis, 15 minute presentation in the museum, handout, presentation of the draft of the written paper, written case study (10 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Through the direct study of selected objects, the art historical way of observing will be trained. At the same time, fundamentals of the iconography, style and context of Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic art of Asia will be conveyed.

Examination topics

Following an introduction to the religious and historical background of Asia and after viewing the collections, the students will hold presentations on the selected objects in the respective museum. Toward the end of the semester the fundamentals of academic writing will be elaborated, and the students will present and discuss a draft of their final papers.
