Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

With Lee Krasner (1908-1984), the Fallstudie focuses on one of the most important representatives of Abstract Expressionism and uses her work as a starting point for discussing key historical, theoretical, and methodological questions of modern painting. This includes, in particular, feminist canon criticism, since the reception of Abstract Expressionism or the "New York School" has focused on its white, male representatives to this day, and the hetero-masculine performance of artistic identity dominates the notion of an exemplarily represented Abstract Expressionism (e.g. Action Painting, loner, hero, cowboy, laconic doer, misunderstood genius, potential violent criminal). Against this background, the Fallstudie provides an introduction to the aesthetics and mediality of Abstract Expressionism, which revolves around topics such as individual expression, abstraction, action painting, big canvas, all-over, the unconscious, freedom, and aesthetic experience. At the same time, the focus on Lee Krasner will allow us to repeatedly reflect on and critically examine the canonical reception of Abstract Expressionism from a gender perspective. The fact that Krasner was also Jackson Pollock's wife and, after his death in 1956, his widow and executor makes her an case study in the relationship between gender and art in the 20th century that is as complex as it is productive.

Given the topic, the methodological focus is on gender studies, but other methodological approaches such as the social history of art, art and politics, and the history of exhibitions and institutions will also be covered. At the same time, we will place a second focus on close readings and the precise observation and analysis of the form of artworks, as well as getting to know source formats such as art criticism, art theoretical essays, interviews, press releases and artists' writings.
