Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Byzantine ceramics are of considerable importance for many fields. Often these ceramics are the only basis on which to date archaological layers or other finds. They also provide insight and allow us to interpret political, economic and cultural relationships as well as the social position of various groups.
This course will convey basic knowledge pertaining to the development of Byzantine ceramics and deepen the course participants' understanding by means of to-scale drawing exercises of authentic ceramic fragments.
The course is composed of theoretical and practical components:
The theoretical component deals with techniques of ceramic production and decoration, artistic motives as well as with the form and use of glazed and unglazed Byzantine ceramics dating from the early, middle and late Byzantine periods.
In the practical component course participants will learn how to create technical drawings of ceramics. Thanks to the rich collection at the Department of Classical Archaology of the University of Vienna students will be able to practice their technical drawing skills there in groups based on original ceramic fragments.
