Contents: The rhythm of the ecclesiastical year dominated everyday life in Byzantium, and the liturgy of the orthodox church had a decided influence on Byzantine art. The liturgy was connected with specific architectural forms and a codified system of decoration: over the course of time it developed into a perfect symbiosis of form and function.
This course will focus on art and representation in connection with liturgy and liturgical objects in sacred space.
Space and objects, their definitions, uses and symbols, their materials and techniques, forms and sizes, decoration and iconography, styles and compositions will be investigated with the help of visual and written historical sources and contemporary literature. Methods: group work, reading and visualization, oral presentations, discussion, written paper.
