Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Visual media are not only used in our "post-factual" age to propagate the narratives that the elites want to be perceived as reality. Rather, their strategic use can be traced back to antiquity. In pre-modern feudal society, it was of course primarily a matter of convincing a small ruling class of the "correctness" of political and religious structures (self-assurance). Since the public functions as voters and consumer pool, however, visual media have been used as propaganda and advertising "for everyone". Individual events can be invented, erased or reinterpreted, entire systems of thought can be recreated through art. Special attention will be paid to the function of visual media in contemporary conflicts. But "reality" in digital media will also be addressed.
Methodologically, such topics can only be dealt with in a transdisciplinary way. However, iconography and iconology play a decisive role as traditional art historical disciplines. The work is always to be evaluated as a source (not merely as an illustration).
The aim is to promote the students' ability to work on a topic transdisciplinarily and to create knowledge independently; this means: not merely to receive the literature, but rather to deal with it independently and critically and to communicate the findings clearly and concisely in oral and written form, as well as to discuss the theses of the other participants on an equal footing.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Active participation in discussions
- Video (scientific results prepared as a film; 20 minutes)
- In-depth study in the form of a written paper (approx. 40,000 characters continuous text)
- By registering for this course, you agree that the automated plagiarism checker software Turnitin will check all written assignments submitted by you in moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement:
- Compulsory attendance. In case of symptom-free or symptom-poor Covid 19 quarantine, attendance is expected by zoom. In case of absence due to illness or exceptional family situation, written proof must be submitted.
- For a positive completion of the course, all partial performances must be achieved:
- active participation in discussions 20%
- video 40 %
- In-depth study in the form of a written paper 40%

Examination topics

As this is a seminar, there is no "exam material". The topics of the videos will cover all epochs from antiquity to the present; suggestions for topics can be made in the three introductory lessons.
The first three units will provide an introduction to the topic and to the creation of a video on the part of the course instructor. Scientific assistance: Dr. Marta Kravchenko (Lviv Academy of Arts, Department of Art History).

Reading list

Will be announced in the course of the semester.
