Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course discusses selected works of art and architecture commissioned at the English royal court in the period between the reign of Henry III (1216-1272) to the age of Richard II (1377-1399). It focuses on a vibrant phase in the production of English art of the Middle ages, when major royal building operations completely transformed Westminster Abbey and Palace to mark it as a centre of the realm. The proseminar will analyse the building projects in London and Windsor and study illuminated manuscripts, murals and panel paintings, asking for the intentions of the patrons and the original function of the objects commissioned. Further, questions relating to the representation of power and royalty, memorial strategies and the notion of a court culture will be adressed. Finally, the English commissions are placed within a European context to interpret them in the light of the dynastic connections and the political ambitions of the Plantagenet family.
