Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Urban change is often the subject of photography: urban planning departments document their work photographically, large-scale projects are highlighted through advertising photography, protest and social transformation through migration in the city are also common photographic subjects in press and art.
All of these subjects can also be found in so-called amateur photography and are directly accessible today as digital media.
In this lecture with exercise, we will look at historical and contemporary photographic practices that help to shape or document urban change. We will learn to differentiate between subjects and areas of work and to critically reflect on their perspectives. We will practise researching photographs in the context of urban change, as well as speaking and writing about photography as an everyday practice and its objects.
