Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this class, students will practice writing scientific descriptions of late medieval books, as they are commonly found in catalogs of collections and in auction catalogs. The technical terms for the description of illuminated book pages and codicological features are trained as well as the dating and localization of artistic decoration and its iconographic identification. In addition, students will learn tools and manuals used in identifying texts, dating paper using watermarks, and classifying bindings.
In addition to some originals in the University Library of Vienna, which will be examined together in the special reading room in one of the sessions, some materials collected in the Institute's research projects on medieval book illumination will serve as a starting point for independent smaller research tasks on the aforementioned topics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will present the results of their researches in the form of short statements. In addition, the writing of a scientific catalog text (approx. 2 pages) and a text as required for auction catalogs (approx. 1 page) is expected.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive degree, all parts of the work must be completed and attendance is mandatory. In case of absence due to illness or exceptional family situation, written proof must be submitted.

Prüfungsstoff ist der Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung.
