Aims, contents and method of the course

By means of selected examples, this case study examines various aspects of architecture in Vienna between 1880 and 1920. Different building tasks will be dealt with, but also different approaches to architecture. We will look at various phenomena - such as that of "hidden modernism" -, think about innovations in the building industry and question the role of commissioners.

Objectives:
- Learning research strategies
- Terminologically correct description of buildings ( in front of the original)
- Analyzing and interpreting architecture
- Critically reflecting on secondary literature
- Writing a seminar paper according to the formal requirements of the institute

Assessment and permitted materials

- active participation
- presentation
- Written seminar paper (approx. 8 pages main text/15,000-20,000 characters)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement:
- Compulsory attendance. In the event of absence due to illness or exceptional family circumstances, written proof must be submitted.
- For a positive completion of the course, all partial performances must be completed (incl. participation in all tutorial units).
- Seminar paper: To ensure good scientific practice, the course instructor may invite students to a grade-relevant discussion after submission of the paper, which must be completed positively.

Assessment criteria, max. 14 points:
- Active participation in discussions (3 points)
- presentation (4 points)
- Written seminar paper (7 points)

Grading scale:
13-14 points (1, very good), 11-12 points (2, good), 9-10 points (3, satisfactory), 7-8 points (4, sufficient), 1-7 points1 (5, not sufficient)
