Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar focuses on recent scholarship on Edouard Manet’s painted works, an artist who for many represents the first modernist. For that purpose, also some older research, which is seen to be pathbreaking by current scholars, will be read. Thus, the seminar also provides some insight into the historiography of art history after world war II, for which Manet can be seen as a paradigmatic object. Different currents of art historical discourses such as phenomenological, socio-historical, poststructuralist or aesthetics-of-production approaches will be discussed. Not least the seminar generally wants to give a basic overview on Manet’s oeuvre, providing space for discussions and image analysis.
