Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The genre of the monument is in bad standing today: while historically, it was used as political tool to shape political consciousness and construct collective memory of social groups and nations, it has been in crisis for the last 200 years. Not only has its "monumentality" been criticized, but it also has to compete with new commemorative tools, such as photographs, posters, film, and the Internet. This course looks at the crisis of the monument from a historical perspective, starting with the French Revolution, but focusing on the 20th century. Monuments continue to be built; in this sense, we need to ask what the forms of official commemoration tell us about the political agendas of the authorities, and in turn, which alternative modes of commemoration are available for individual or group agendas not commissioned by official politics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading will take into account the weekly discussions, a short descriptive analysis of a performance, one short oral presentation, and one 15-page art historical paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of this course is a historical overview on one hand, and the ability to critically evaluate the relationship between political power, art, and audience on the other hand. As much as possible we will visit art works in public space during the course.

Examination topics

Kurze Einführungen zu den jeweiligen Wochenthemen, Analyse der Lektüre, Diskussionen der Wochenthemen und Studentenpräsentationen wechseln sich ab.
