Aims, contents and method of the course

Dionysus/Bacchus is one of the most complex deities. He is associated with wine and intoxication, ecstatic frenzy, freedom and divine inspiration, but also with madness, destruction, chaos and death. Dionysus was depicted countless times in the art of the 16th and 17th centuries. This seminar focuses on the iconography of this deity and his entourage, consisting of nymphs, maenads, satyrs and the drunken Silenos, and examines the various contexts of their appearance in the works of Michelangelo, Titian, Poussin, Rubens, Velázquez and others. The aim is to develop a precise terminology in order to name the “Dionysian visual vocabulary” and to sharpen our view of the works of art in which artists expressed joie de vivre, moral condemnation and states of intoxication in different ways.
The analysis of works from two centuries, including those in which Dionysus is depicted as a single figure (Michelangelo, Caravaggio), during his triumphal processions (Heemskerk, Moeyart) and during his encounter and subsequent marriage to Ariadne (Raphael, Carracci), is accompanied by presentations that focus on the pictorial form of the bacchanal (Poussin, Carpioni), on the appearance of Dionysus with Venus and Ceres (Spranger) or on works in which the deity mingles with simple contemporaries in taverns (Velázquez, Manfredi, Bentveughels).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mindestanforderung:
- Anwesenheitspflicht. Bei Absenz wegen Krankheit oder familiärer Ausnahmesituation ist ein schriftlicher Nachweis vorzulegen.
- Für einen positiven Abschluss der Lehrveranstaltung müssen alle Teilleistungen erbracht werden.
- Seminararbeit: Zur Sicherung der guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis kann der/die Lehrveranstaltungsleiter/in Studierende zu einem notenrelevanten Gespräch nach Abgabe der Arbeit einladen, welches positiv zu absolvieren ist.

Beurteilungsmaßstab:
- aktive Beteiligung an Diskussionen 15%
- Referat und Präsentation 30 %
- Vertiefung in Form einer schriftlichen Hausarbeit 55%

Notenschlüssel:
1 (sehr gut) 100-90 Punkte; 2 (gut) 89-81 Punkte; 3 (befriedigend) 80-71 Punkte; 4 (genügend) 70-61 Punkte; 5 (nicht genügend) 60-0 Punkte
