Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The female energy is a crucial component of Buddhism and Hinduism. Devi (Skr for goddess) reveals different aspects and natures (i.g. destructive, creativ, maternal, activ) and can appear in various forms. In the course we will discuss and analyse female deities like Lakshmi, Tara, Durga, Parvati.

Assessment and permitted materials

Mandatory attendance of the course and the tutorium, active participation, text analysis, 20 minute presentation, handout, draft of the written paper, written case study (10 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Through the direct study of selected objects, the art historical way of observing and a methodological approach will be trained. At the same time, fundamentals of the iconography, style and context of Hindu and Buddhist art will be conveyed.

Examination topics

Following an introduction to the religious and historical background of Asia, the students will hold presentations on the selected objects. During the semester the fundamentals of academic writing will be elaborated.
