Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The pictorial form "triptych" had its heyday from the 15th to the 17th century and subsequently lost its importance in painting. In the 19th century, however, many artists rediscovered the three-panel painting as a form of composition and used it increasingly for profane content. The tripartite division as a constituent element of these "Altars without God" (Lankheit 1959) and its effect on composition and pictorial narrative is the subject of the case study.
In the first part of the case study, the students learn about medieval triptychs and analyse and discuss their structure, function and narrative form with the help of compulsory reading. In the second part, the students will describe selected triptychs of the 19th and 20th centuries (by Félix Vallotton, Hans von Marées, Käthe Kollwitz, Giacomo Balla, Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Dix and Max Beckmann, among others) and analyse the respective relationship between form and content.

Assessment and permitted materials

The overall grade of seminar is composed of the following achievements of the students: Punctual and regular attendance, active participation in discussions, preparation of compulsory reading, oral presentation/lecture (15 min), and written seminar paper (12 pages) as well as participation in the corresponding tutorial (no absence possible).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For a positive grade, all assignments must be completed. A negative grade in the seminar paper results in a negative overall grade
