Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Books of hours are among the most sophisticated illuminated manuscripts of the late Middle Ages and early modern period. Methods of establishing time and place of origin and of making attribution to certain artists will be learned and practised using the example of major works of this book genre, which convey an impression of the main lines of development in painting.
Students will conduct independent research on the respective work and evaluate the scientific literature with regard to questions of dating, localisation and attribution. In a short presentation (approx. 5 minutes), they present the initial results of their research and it will be discussed which research problem is particularly interesting and should be addressed in the presentation (20 minutes). The presentation considers different research opinions with regard to the chosen topic and concludes with a reasoned statement, which should also be based on own observations. The research question is dealt with in writing in the academic term paper. The formal structure of the presentation and term paper will be discussed in the course. In-depth information is provided in the tutorial, which is compulsory.
