Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We encounter promises in everyday life in very different moments: in everyday jargon as casual utterances, at the city hall as binding statements to a close person that you want to marry, or at an election event to an unknown crowd. The seminar is concerned with the cultural practices that turn these speech acts into promises. Furthermore, we will deal with representations of promises in popular media (music, film, literature). The aim is to work out the specific social effects that connect the variety of everyday cultural expressions of promises.
